2000 Hunter 420 Passage Center Cockpit Sloop Sailboat with single inboard diesel power...
In 2000, Hunter offered the new Passage 420, a slightly smaller version of the well received 450. This is a flawless representation of Hunter's ever popular Passage Series. Comfortable inside and out with large accommodation below. She is a user friendly boat with an emphasis on ease of handling. Dual, single line reefing means everything can be controlled from the cockpit. The decision to go with a small jib and a large main reduces to a minimum the time spent using the winch.
This fresh-water model is well equipped with reverse air, furling main and jib, electric halyard and jib sheet winches. Cockpit SS Arch, Raymarine knot log, depth sounder, VHF radio, Radar GPS, two electric heads, diesel heater (new 07), Electric Bow Thruster new in 2006, Electric windlass, propane stove w/oven, top & front loading 12V refrigerator with separate freezer, Dodger with full enclosure, Leather Upholstery and more....over $60,000 in custom upgrades Hunter has adopted the European rating system and has received CE Certification for Offshore Sailing.
Accommodations & Layout
Inside, the Passage 420 has a modern and spacious look. The sealed holly and teak sole and teak cabinetry adds warmth and accent, with just enough of a traditional reminder. Liberal use of fixed and opening ports (seven of each), and five deck hatches, give plenty of light. The midship entrance leads to a large Main Salon. The well- appointed U-shaped Galley is to port. Three burner stove with oven, double stainless sinks, side-by-side refrigerator and freezer (dual entry for the former) and microwave are all standard. Solid teak cabinets with push-pulls and Corian countertops are attractive. A nice touch is the built-in-the-counter trash receptacle.
To starboard is the compact Navigation Station, which houses the controls to all of the vessel's systems. Just forward is a cabinet with TV, VCR, and Stereo System (all standard), followed by a generously sized convertible dining area. A highly polished teak table and extra ottoman are complimented by a long portside settee.
The Guest Stateroom, forward, incorporates a walk-through to the ensuite forward Head and is fitted with a double berth and substantial storage.
The Passage 420 takes full advantage of the real benefit of the center cockpit design: a large aft cabin that can legitimately claim to be a "Master Stateroom." The queen-sized island berth, with plenty of walk- around room, is surrounded by hanging lockers and loads of cabinet storage. A slide-out desk provides a second work area. Six of the boat's opening ports and hatches are located in the aft cabin, offering lots of ventilation, even if you decide not to spring for the optional two-zone air conditioning. The ensuite Head includes a partitioned shower area and, like the forward Head and the Galley, has a Corian counter. The Heads are utilitarian rather than elegant, but they are bright and appear easy to clean. The 6'5" headroom in the aft cabin is a pleasant surprise.
No wonder that the Passage series has become popular on the West coast, where it has been embraced as a live-aboard boat.
Back outside, the Helm Station is surrounded by wrap- around seating. A fold-up table works nicely for serving refreshments. Two taffrail seats add desirable perches over the transom, which itself conceals considerable storage space for the optional generator and an inflatable dinghy. A fold-down swim ladder tucks into the platform, and a hot and cold transom shower is well placed for cleaning off sand before re-entering the boat. The 420 comes equipped with a 50 HP Yanmar diesel engine. An optional 62 HP, 4 cylinder, triple charged Yanmar is also available and will bring the under-power speed up to about 8 knots burning 1.5 gallons per hour.
